MARRY ME comic page

Page 15: One Bullet Dodged

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

It took me ages to finally settle on a generic song title that included the word “love.” Seems like almost every possible title has already been made into a song, including “Where’s My Love?” Click that link if you want to see a very interesting dance someone performed to a song with that title by the artist Caroline.

VOTE!

Today’s Top Web Comics voting incentive is Eisu’s original character design for Guy, which was very different from the version you see in the comics. I felt he looked a little too pretty/girly, which is understandable, considering that this was the description I gave Eisu for Guy: “Standard leading man type. He’s a country boy from Oklahoma, but he’s got a sensitive side. All the girls reading should instantly fall in love with him.” We went through two more versions before settling on the final look for Guy, and you’ll see the second set of sketches on Friday.  (Click the image to download the first issue of Marry Me on Wowio and see all of Eisu’s original Guy sketches!)

    Again, love this page!!

I’m glad the image for Guy changed, the first version, although indubitably perfectly adorable, seems too self-assured and cocky to fit the character Guy needs to be in order for the story to work properly… also, to me at least, it screams SIXTEEN!!! and I’m sure there’re laws against sixteen year olds marrying a superstar on stage without parental consent…
…jacket looks futuristic to me, too… maybe it’s just ’cause it’s 5 sizes too small? (I’m not a fan of the look on girls, either)

Impressed with the angle in panel one, and love both the art and the dialogue in panel 6!

hangin’ on the edge of my seat as always :)
    keep up the fantastic work

  2. Tiami Says:

I was wondering how Stasia would react to finding out Guy wasn’t actually a fan… as it turns out, pretty well? Great drawings, as always. Even if this never makes it as a movie, it’ll be a great book!

    “So you’re not gay?”

    “Correct.”

    “Whew!”

    Hysterical.

  3. AlpineBob Says:

The current Guy seems like an average guy to me.
I think the original Guy is a lot more attractive than the current one - but I could be biased because the current Guy looks a lot like me (or vice-versa), and as far as I know no girl I’ve met has “instantly [fallen] in love with” me…

  4. Bobby Crosby Says:

Tiami: Stasia still doesn’t know that it wasn’t his sign, though, so we’ll see how she reacts when she finds out it was his female best friend’s. She probably thinks that Guy likes her, but just doesn’t care much for her music, and she’s relieved that he’s not a crazy fan. She might think he likes her for her charity work and such, and her looks, of course. Doesn’t know yet that he barely knows anything about her.

  5. Chapin Says:

Yeah, the original guy is well drawn, but too generically “pretty boy.” He also does look 16 instead of 26 like the Guy we have, which wouldn’t have worked as well for this story. Eisu is awesome as usual though. (Also love Guy’s expression in the final panel.)

As for this page, it’s possibly my favorite of the series, easily in the top 3 at least. The simpleness, yet awkwardness of the conversation seems to fit perfectly considering the situation. Also shows a lot of character interaction, while still throwing humor in!

  6. hans Says:

Hello, I just found this webcomic. Good work.
I’m not normally into webcomics, so don’t expect me to show up here regularly. But I have one question:
Why did Guy marry Stasia. We have seen it all from her perspective and she was just crazy that moment. But Guy seems pretty collectet to me. Not the type to marry a strange girl on stage.
Sorry if this was asked befor. I haven’t read throug all comments yet.

  7. Eisu Says:

In my defense, when asked to designed Guy, I didn’t know the type of character he’s supposed to be yet other than “girls would almost instantly fall in love with him at first sight” and thus the futuristic pretty boy look

  8. Eisu Says:

Oh wait, Bobby already explained my defense, ha ha ha, oh well.

  9. Bobby Crosby Says:

Yeah, Eisu knew almost nothing about the story or the characters at the time, and Guy was the only one who wasn’t perfect on his first try. He did an amazing job designing all the characters.

Hans: Thanks. CLICK HERE and then read a bunch of the comments after that too for the reasons.

  10. Borys Says:

    Ahoj!
Hmm, girls would be interested in a pansy straight out of Backstreet Boys?
    Never did understand women …
BTW - I like this comic. It’s silliness is entertaining.
Oh - a comment I wanted to make on Parker - IMO she has a type of butt found among some South African tribes, and found in large amounts in the Candi comic.

  11. Namsab Says:

Argh, I want to vote but TWC seems to have a little problem so I can’t. :/
But what I can see from the li’l preview-pic and what I’ve seen from the real Guy, I’d definitely prefer the real one. :3 He looks more fun and easier to have around than such a pretty face. XD

I love guy in this page the most.. “That one were you sing about love” is the most perfect answer to give a popstar. Somewhere, sometime, everyone of them had a song about love.. XD
And the explanation is so great… “I’m male.” “Oh, right!”

  12. Moose Says:

Noooo I can’t see the picture on TWC! :(

I love Guy’s comment- “Oh, that one where you sing about love”. He’s just described most songs that exist- let alone ones by female pop stars like Stasia.

  13. Flying Infant Says:

Curse you all and your addicting comics!!

    *waves fist*

    *gives thumbs up*

  14. Namsab Says:

Wohoo, I got the picture X3
The incentive guy looks more like one of Stasia’s exboyfriends for me.. XD still looks cool though ;3

  15. Aishreed Says:

Even though I can’t really see the piccy, from what I can see I definately think the Guy in the comics would be much easier to fall in love with. Plus, he’s exactly my type…now if only he were real…(and not married XD).

Can’t wait for the next strip!

  16. Duckity Says:

    The art = love.
    Guy is so frikkin adorable.

  17. KittyKat Says:

    Woo new page!!! :)

I agree, Scruffy!Guy is much much much better. I’d hug ‘im. *lurves*

  18. vfhvhv Says:

This is self serving emo fan fiction about your life…Please stop this madness…

  19. Kate Says:

Hm. If Guy was born and raised in Tulsa, he wouldn’t be much of a country boy.

  20. Bobby Crosby Says:

He said he’s originally from Oklahoma and currently lives in Tulsa, but that doesn’t mean he’s lived his whole life in Tulsa. But he probably won’t end up seeming like much of a country boy anyway.

  21. Hannah Says:

I saved the lates page but I thought it updated page by page, but it doesn’t so I was waiting and waiting and waiting even though you already updated >

  22. Gretchen Says:

LOVE stasias expression in that last pannel…..awesomeness.

  23. Gridds Says:

I have to agree the current “Guy” is MUCH better. Not that the first isn’t bad looking at all, it just doesn’t fit the character in the comic. I like Guy’s expression in the last panel. It almost reads…”What have I gotten myself into?” Hehehe!

  24. ThatOneChick Says:

Gack! Reading the last few comments for the last page- Wha? His name’s Denny? … Awesome. ♥ I feel so… special, now. I named one of the [supporting/side] characters. Whew! xD

Stasia’s face as she says ‘Oh, right.’ xDDD

Scruffy Guy rules. Too many Bishounens drawn out there anyways. ♥

  25. Angel Says:

Wow. Eisu is TALENTED. You said all the female readers should fall in love with him immediately, and I fell in love with that sketch the second I saw it. Kudos.

Love that answer. “Why don’t you like my music?” “Because I’m, uh… male.”

  26. Megami Says:

Guy’s original design looks vaguely akin to Trunks from Dragon Ball Z. He’s got a most excellent cute haircut, a short jacket with upturned collar, dark pants–definitely pulls off the original description. (And, I mean, really, what preteen/teenage girl watching Dragon Ball Z -didn’t- fall for Trunks?)

I haven’t yet commented on how much I’m adoring this comic–it’s wonderful, and I, like many others, adore Parker. xD And the rest of the cast, o’ course, but Parker’s crazy is definitely my kind of character. Eisu’s art is wonderful to see in multiple comics. It really fits this one, too. x3 Can’t wait for more~~ ♥

  27. Sharn Musashi Says:

im really enjoying this comic so far. the art is terrific. and the storyline is really funny (poor parker!)

    later days!

  28. j Says:

oh she pick a random guy from the audience and married him let me guess the get in fight fall in love and live happy ever after. sorry if i spoiled the week storyline for any one but the crappy art work and week story line is very insulting to the eyes

  29. Bobby Crosby Says:

And J returns for his usual nonsense after being gone for a few pages. Pretty cool that he keeps coming back for more even though he hates it so much. And his guesses are, of course, very wrong.

  30. Tamanegi Says:

Every board needs a pet troll ;-)

  31. Keito Says:

True! Hard to take them seriously when they can’t use proper grammar and spelling, too.

I gotta say, I’m not much into the scruffy look, but the current Guy is much more age- and style-appropriate than the original.

Very amusing story so far; keep it up!

  32. darktail Says:

…Ah, I fell in love with Guy just by looking at the banner on TWC, so there. :P

…I was surprised that the comic was so high on TWC with only 14 pages, but I can see it totally deserve it.

…Keep up the good work, see you next page. :)

  33. Dan W Says:

Well, now we know what Stasia’s old boyfreinds all have in common.

I wondered if you were going to be a good enough storyteller to come back and tie up the loose ends you’ve been leaveing. Good work.

  34. Alekxander Says:

And every troll needs to have spelling and grammar deficiencies. :)
Anyway, this is an entertaining read with likeable characters, interesting story, and excellent art. I look forward to future updates. :D

  35. Lauren Says:

This comic is most awesome. I’ve been reading for a while, but this is my first comment. Do please keep up the good work! I’m hooked.

And j, please, if you’re going to insult, at least insult with proper grammar. You misspelled “weak.”

  36. Kate Says:

Crappy art work? What are you comparing it to, da Vinci?

.. Because EVERYTHING is crappy compared to da Vinci. According to my old art teacher.

  37. StevenW Says:

Love the way Guy is gripping his knee in the first box. And his expression in the 3rd is excellent!

I would say Stasia & Guy look too close together in the last box though, given the awkward situation…

  38. Tragic Rabbit Says:

WoW, i jsut found this comic and im very impressed. for a comic with less than 20 pages you guys really have your act together, it looks very profesional

  39. Lenerd Says:

Ok J dud I don’t agree with you opinion, however I will respect your right to have it and voice it. That binge said you look like an idiot when you don’t use spell check. Its weak not week. Week is a seven-day time period; weak is the opposite of strong. I have made this mistake myself on forms, and no one will take you seriously if you make mistakes like that. Every one is going to think you’re just an angry 15-year-old.

Granted this may be a weak story then again it may surprise us. I will give Bobby the benefit of the doubt, but even if it is that predictable it can still be a funny and entertaining story.

As far as art goes I have seen better but not much. Art is a matter of opinion mostly, and I don’t care what any art teacher says to that.

    Keep up the good work!

  40. Bobby Crosby Says:

“Well, now we know what Stasia’s old boyfreinds all have in common.”

    We do?

  41. Eisu Says:

StevenW: I would say Stasia & Guy look too close together in the last box though, given the awkward situation…

Yeap, but if you notice, Stasia’s the one that’s inching closer and closer to Guy, cos unlike Guy, awkward situations shouldn’t really faze her so much (celebrities and all that)

  42. ThatOneChick Says:

xD Wait, what’s that mean? Is Dan W suggesting that all her old boyfriends were… gay? -confused-

  43. Bobby Crosby Says:

    Also confused.

  44. ThatOneChick Says:

Glad I’m not the only one…

  45. Lorelai Says:

    Gotta say, guys. Lovely comic.
It’s entertaining, and I’m impressed at how much attention you’ve gotten for such a short time period (in comparison to a lot of others).
I’m a big fan of Eisu’s other work, and I’ve definitely added this site to my watch list.
    =]

  46. Chapin Says:

Dan was implying that, although I don’t think that’s what the strip was saying. I’d imagine that at a concert like Stasia’s, most guys who come alone, which she still might think he did, are gay. Possibly a stereotype, but one I could see her having, so the fact that she picked a straight guy to marry is dodging a bullet. Sticking with stereotypes here, I could totally see a gay guy willing to marry someone like her. (Figured someone would say he’d decline if he was gay.)

Also Eisu, no need for in your defense, the characters all look great! Only thing you need to defend is the lack of updates on No Pink Ponies!

  47. Bobby Crosby Says:

“Dan was implying that, although I don’t think that’s what the strip was saying.”

    Correct, it wasn’t.

“Possibly a stereotype, but one I could see her having . . .”

Well, the reason she asked is simply because he just said that he doesn’t like her music because he’s male, so that led her to assume that he was a straight male, so she asked to confirm that assumption

” . . . so the fact that she picked a straight guy to marry is dodging a bullet.”

    Correct.

    And thanks, Lorelai!

  48. Mel Says:

omg i would of thought it the other way.
that males would love a singer that sings like naked on stage lol
so i woulda been more like
    ur gay arent u?
    lol
    ooops my bad lmao

  49. Bobby Crosby Says:

Well, guys would still love STASIA herself, but just not her music. Like Jessica Simpson, for example. How many straight guys would say they love her music? Or Britney Spears? Although almost no one even likes Britney’s looks anymore anyway.

  50. Chapin Says:

Yeah Mel, like I said. Stasia probably thinks that Guy is alone, as he appears to be at the time.

Someone seeing Stasia, Jessica Simpson, etc. front row alone is… either a stalker or gay? Guy obvioously knows shit about her, thus not being a stalker. Not too surprising to think that he might be gay!

  51. K.C.(NPP forum member I'm a Pony) Says:

Just saw the Vote insentive and I must say one thing:

OH GOD MY EYES!!! Thank God that wasn’t the final version. As superfical as it is, I see a character like that as the main character, I go somewhere else(thus explaining the overall lack of decent Shojen-Ai in my bookmarks). Would of been sad too, since this is turning to be a great comic.

  52. StevenW Says:

Eisu Says: Yeap, but if you notice, Stasia’s the one that’s inching closer and closer to Guy, cos unlike Guy, awkward situations shouldn’t really faze her so much (celebrities and all that)

I’m sorry, I didn’t really explain myself well there; basically I just thought Guy’s right shoulder dropped too quick from one box to the next. If I were Guy, I’d definitely still be leant back in shock!!

  53. Bobby Crosby Says:

He kind of tenses up, lifting his right shoulder, because she leaned close to him in her excitement at discovering that he’s probably not gay in Panel 6, and then when she kind of backed away to do her “Whew!” thing, he released his tension and went back to a normal sitting position.

  54. Robert Says:

Very funny. I’m glad the character wasn’t as pretty as the original drawing. The way he is being drawn is very similar to a lot of recent interpretations of Bruce Banner.

  55. Valerie Says:

That was so great. XD I never even thought of the possibility that Guy could be gay! (I was too busy ♥ing Parker.) Awesome job, guys. XD

  56. mamibunny Says:

I like the way Guy looks now… he looks more ‘out of place’ next to the fan-tab-ulos Stasia…. can’t wait for the next page… *squee* XD

  57. Valerie Says:

“Well, now we know what Stasia’s old boyfreinds all have in common.”

OH MY GOD! I never even thought of that until I saw this comment! XD

  58. Dan W Says:

Your scripting did seem to imply that Stasia’s old boyfreinds were gay, that ties her comment in page 2 (i think) and her relief here together rather well.

Of course, if that’s not what you had in mind, that’s cool too.

  59. Bobby Crosby Says:

“Your scripting did seem to imply that Stasia’s old boyfreinds were gay, that ties her comment in page 2 (i think) and her relief here together rather well.”

Ah, no, those were actually two totally unrelated things. And I don’t think the NBA’s leading scorer would be gay! Her line about what they all had in common was just a stupid joke which I thought wasn’t so subtle, but apparently was to some! As I said in an earlier comment, “The reason she asked is simply because he just said that he doesn’t like her music because he’s male, so that led her to assume that he was a straight male, so she asked to confirm that assumption.”

  60. j Says:

when i said this guys artwork was carp was comparing him/her to Brion Foulke

  61. ThatOneChick Says:

J, little board troll buddy, what would we do without your bratty, badly spelled [carp?], un-capitalized [when i said], un-punctuated [guys] commentary? Oh, we’d just /die/!

[Let me do anyone reading this a favor (and myself, since your atrocious typing is giving me a flaming headache). “When I said this guy’s artwork was crap I was comparing him to Brion Foulke.” Though I doubt you spelled “Brion” right. Hmm.]

And that’s my daily dose of bitchiness. ^^ ‘Scuse the language, please.

  62. Kate Says:

    Carp.

    Fish. I do enjoy seafood.

Is it bad I have no idea who “Brion Foulke” is?

  63. Bobby Crosby Says:

He makes “Flipside,” a good comic online.

  64. Valerie Says:

I’m not sure how you can compare those two artists. o0 Their styles are too different to compare. At least for me.

And J, are you trying to suck up now? XD You’re like “HAHA THIS SUCKS” and now you’re saying, “Oh, I’m sorry, what I MEANT was that blahblahblahinsertexcusesforsayingsumbstuffhere.”

And if they weren’t all gay, I don’t get what Stasia’s ex-bfs all had in common. ._. I’ll go back to that page and try to figure it out.

  65. j Says:

no way i wold suck up to this pice of trash

  66. Kate Says:

They were all REALLY successful. Her ex’s, I mean.

  67. Megs Says:

^.^; yay @ your description of Guy “All the girls reading should instantly fall in love with him” It worked here!! ♥

  68. Micah Says:

j: You are what we call an asshat.

  69. Dandelioon Says:

Not gay LoL alwys check that one before you get married ladies

  70. ScreamingFalcon Says:

@Valerie: I think she was refering to their “unwrapped birthday packages.” I hope that helps.
