MARRY ME comic page

Page 18: Breaking News

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

I really like this page. And another perfect job by Eisu, as usual. One of the other comics that I write, Last Blood, is a Free Comic Book Day book this year and I just received my shipment of copies from the printers today. The back cover features an ad for Marry Me, which you can see in this video.

ATTENTION ARTISTS: I need some of you to draw my upcoming graphic novels, and possibly to continue on with Marry Me after the initial film story is completed by Eisu later this year, so if you’re interested, please CHECK OUT THIS THREAD for all the details.

And here’s a positive review of Marry Me that I keep forgetting to mention.

  1. Rehtwol Says:

Wow… problem, and maybe Parker should have kicked a little HARDER on her way out…

  2. Delos Says:

Ahhhh…I love the news title: “Stasia Weds Unshaven Fan In Oklahoma.”

I love Parker’s face in the last panel. :D

  3. Mikaru Says:

Finally, some insight into what happened!

Keep up the good work guys. =)

  4. totz Says:

Wow. This page is awesome. I really have nothing more to say at the moment. I’m glad to see Stanley getting more face time. We need to see more of Gary and Denny too, though, and I really dislike Buck. He’s kinda an ass.

  5. ThatOneChick Says:

    “Uh, that happened.”
    -giggle-
These strips are getting progressively better and better.
As for this one, I have nothing more to say but this-
I love Stasia’s ‘Yes I’ll Marry You’ face.

  6. ThatOneChick Says:

Oh, and ditto on what totz said.
    DENNY. ♥
    XD

  7. Neni Says:

I love stasia’s face on the first pannel :D

  8. Winter Says:

I think M. Nevans is a little delusional if he thinks Stasia would’ve married him under any circumstances.

  9. FreeSample Says:

What was awesome? the “omg I don’t believe it!” faces of the fans behind the filming fan! XD

  10. Namsab Says:

    “Yes what?” XD

    Parker should’ve definitely kicked a loot harder…
and I can’t believe that guy has a girl. xP She probably doesn’t even know. XD

    Yay, Stanley!

  11. Shlippy Says:

What the hell is that on his finger?

  12. Bobby Crosby Says:

It’s a motion line of him spinning his finger around his ear in the traditional “That person’s CRAZY!” gesture.

  13. Tibbar de Gniw Says:

Awwww, poor Janny. She looks so stressed in the second panel.

  14. KharminaBurana Says:

“Unshaven Fan” Yeah… that IS a headline you’d see about something like that nowadays.

Buck however, man, what a prick! Not two panels and already I dislike him. Well done! XD

  15. Tiami Says:

“Stasia Weds Unshaven Fan in Oklahoma” is what made this page for me.

I was looking through the archives–aside from the cover, do we actually see that the sign Guy’s holding says “Marry Me”? I don’t know if the cover will change, since that moment never actually happened in the plot (in that outfit).

    Great job as usual!

  16. Bobby Crosby Says:

We will see the sign eventually (soon) and it may look different from how it appeared on the cover.

  17. cash Says:

best thing is stanley on panel 4 =)

  18. Kate Says:

I love this strip. Especially the last panel. “I kicked that guy on my way to the bathroom!” I really wasn’t expecting that, and it was HILARIOUS. It totally cracked me up. Parker’s the best.

  19. Elisel Says:

*mad laughter* I just found this comic through TWC this morning, and I’m loving it! Keep up the awesome storytelling. :)

  20. SerenityLee Says:

I’ve been reading this comic from the very beginning, and waiting impatiently for every update just like all the rest, but this is the first time I have ever left a comment.

I just wanted to tell both Bobby and Eisu that you are doing a great job! Its a really great comic so far and I can’t wait to see it become a movie!

I really like that right now its based in Oklahoma, because thats where I live. Why did you choose Oklahoma of all places?

I also really like that you interact with your fans, and even the not so positive of people. Its pretty cool.

    Keep up the wonderful work!

  21. ThatOneChick Says:

Meh. I don’t see how Stanley’s a prick- Consider it. You’re a Pop Star’s manager. A CRAZY Pop Star’s manager, and we all know it’s true. The crazy Pop Star you’re managing just married some random Guy [Quite Literally] in front of thousands of her fans, if not more. The story’s on CNN.

    How would you react?
    I’d spaz too.
I think he managed it fairly admirably, really.

  22. Eisu Says:

I don’t think KharminaBurana was calling Stanley a prick… I think Kharmina is calling Buck Nevens a prick…

  23. Raven Says:

    kick harded next time!!!!

  24. El Says:

Nice page again. :) Bobby, I’ve added you to my AOL, give me a buzz when you’re on re: your planned future projects. :)

  25. El Says:

Make that AIM. And my ID is elbagarpie. *Forgetful mode * -_____-

  26. Bellsandy Says:

I came upon your comic through your ad on the Dreamland Chronicles. I have to say your story has hooked me, and I’ll definitely keep coming back! That and Eisu’s work on the pages is great! I love how it’s illustrated, and the expressions, and all the different angles for the panels! It’s an inspiration. I hope it keeps going well for ya as readers increase, as I’m sure they will :-D Great work!

  27. KittyKat Says:

*laughs* Parker just keeps getting better and better….

Janny’s face in the second panel = love.

    Keep up the goodness! :D

  28. Conversation Says:

But what happened to Stasia’s student cap between pages 10 and 18? She did have a cap during the ceremony on page 10.

  29. totz Says:

I don’t think Stanley’s the manager, though. Stage manager maybe, but that’s not a high-level position on a music tour.

  30. ThatOneChick Says:

    Meerp.
    Dx
I read wrong. Sorry. I do that a lot, since I lost my contacts.
    >>
    I need glasses.

  31. Caramel Says:

XDDD Oh, I just LOVE this!

I dislike Buck very much so far. O_o

    He’s just jealous. XD

  32. Lenerd Says:

I love Guys face in the first panle. You can tell what he is thinking “OHSHITOHSHITOHSHIT”

  33. Conversation Says:

My guess would be that Janny is Stasia’s manager. It is would be a neat trick, in my opinion, to make us assume that Janny plays a humble role in the enterprise merely because she is, among other things, her sister’s dresser and pregnant. A play with our preconceived notions.

  34. Bobby Crosby Says:

I want to give spoilers so bad! But I won’t! Except to say something that isn’t a spoiler at all: Stanley’s not her manager. In the script he’s listed as an ASSISTANT, but I don’t know what his official job title would be. Anyone who wears that outfit can’t be very high up the food chain, though!

  35. Valerie Says:

“Wow… problem, and maybe Parker should have kicked a little HARDER on her way out…”

    Agreed. XD

  36. A Lilac Lie Says:

Lmao… i just begin to love Parker more and more as this goes on

  37. Lunar Patronus Says:

Found your comic a bit back from Red String.
    I love your style.
Beautiful way to introduce and portray the story thus far, I’m on the edge of my seat to see what it’s all going to end up like.
I love your clean lines and angles in the frames, and I love The emotion you are capable of portraying here. Now If only I could do the same.. ^^
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
    GANBATTE!

  38. Rollo Says:

“I want to give spoilers so bad! But I won’t!”
That’s my man! *GGG* But suffer not, you will be rewarded through the joy of our excitement! ;)

Something I expecially like about this comic is the change of perspective. It’s great! I said this before when talking about the moment janny was caught with her pants down (hee, hee!). But still the changing points-of-view build up tension. It is amazing how the story accelerates - something you really recognize only if you go back in the archive and read it as a whole.
A reason for this surely is (I guess) you thinking of this story as a flick, not a script. Well, it works excellent for the medium of grafic novel, as you are currently demonstrating.
Which leads me to a question of interest: At which point exactly do you, Bobby, and Eisu, handle over the concept from writer to illustrator? How much of the composition of the single panel is predetermined? Does Eisu get a preset about the grafic composition? Or just a description what has to happen in the panel? Or has he even influence on the storytelling?
In short terms, how do you coordinate the work?
Needless to say however the answer might be, I am aware that the brilliant result is only possible because you both are masters of your art!

  39. oldbob Says:

Nice work, keep it up. I’m look forward to your next update

  40. Bobby Crosby Says:

In this post you’ll find the script for the first page of MM and here’s the script for Page 18 –

    —————-
    Page 18

Panel 1: We see STASIA and GUY up on stage, right after Guy was called up on stage. JANNY (off-screen for this panel) is watching the footage in the control room with many monitors and such, but for Panel 1 we’re just seeing a close up of the main monitor that she’s watching. Your choice on if we see the outsides of the monitor or not — we could just have the whole panel be what’s actually on the monitor, a shot from the front of Stasia and Guy standing next to each other on stage, probably seeing them from like the knees up. And let’s not see the MARRY ME sign anywhere. Stasia looks nervous/excited and Guy looks nervous/uncomfortable. If we don’t see the monitor at all but just see the actual scene taking place, the word balloons should just be regular balloons. But if we see the outsides of the monitor at all, make them electric/radio/burst balloons, or at least have the pointer for the balloon be in that lightning type shape that those types of balloons have. But it’s probably best for this panel to just zoom in on them and not see the monitor at all, so just regular balloons for that.

    STASIA: YES.

    GUY: YES WHAT?

    STASIA: YES, I’LL MARRY YOU!

Panel 2: Now we cut to seeing JANNY and PARKER sitting in front of the bank of monitors, really close to them. Something like this, except you could have less monitors –

    http://www.wvu.edu/~radiotv/images/Control_Room_Large.jpg

And let’s see them more from the side, so we can see Janny’s face better as she says her line. But we need to see the monitors too, although what’s on them doesn’t matter much — no need to waste time on the detail there, except for maybe the big one in the middle where you could draw a quick little Stasia and Guy maybe. If we do see what’s on the other monitors, though, it would be other angles of the moment, with a close up of Guy’s face and then Stasia’s face and maybe a wide shot of the whole stage and the crowd, stuff lilke that. They don’t need to be detailed, though. Your choice on Parker’s expression, and Janny should look a little sad and frustrated, slumped shoulders, head down, maybe putting a hand up against her forehead.

JANNY: WE’RE GOING TO HAVE TO BURN ALL THESE TAPES.

Panel 3: An ASSISTANT, the guy who was looking at his watch in Panel 1 of Page 8 and who appeared earlier yelling out times, enters the control room and he’s POINTING at the bank of monitors in front of Janny and Parker. He looks at Janny like “Are you joking?” Janny looks suddenly worried/scared and Parker looks a little shocked.

ASSISTANT: JANNY, COME QUICK. BREAKING NEWS ON CNN.

    JANNY: WHAT HAPPENED?

ASSISTANT (pointing at the monitors): UH, THAT HAPPENED.

Panel 4: We see a single TELEVISION now in another room, with the TV taking up most of the panel, but gotta leave some room for the two fairly long word balloons, which should both have the electric/radio pointers at least, like you did with Stasia’s balloon on Panel 3 of Page 10.

On the TV we see that it’s CNN Breaking News, although we don’t actually have to see the CNN logo or have it be too similar to that, although you can if you want. Here’s a reference –

    http://insidecable.blogsome.com/images/100406c.jpg

The text at the bottom of the screen should say “BREAKING NEWS” and then “STASIA WEDS UNSHAVEN FAN IN OKLAHOMA”.

And on the screen itself we see footage of the wedding taken from the front row of the concert by a fan’s cell phone, looking up from a very low angle at Stasia, Guy, and the PRIEST, similar look as Panel 5 of Page 10, except now a very low angle. And if it could look slightly blurry/pixelated somehow, that would be cool.

CNN ANCHOR (off-screen, radio balloon or pointer at least): AND ON THE PHONE WITH US NOW IS BUCK NEVENS, THE YOUNG MAN WHO SHOT THIS FOOTAGE WITH HIS CELL PHONE. DESCRIBE THE SCENE FOR US.

BUCK (off-screen, radio balloon or pointer at least): IT WAS CRAZY. STASIA JUST TOTALLY LOST IT AND MARRIED SOME DUDE! WOULD HAVE BEEN ME PROBABLY, BUT SHE SAW THAT I HAD MY GIRL WITH ME.

Panel 5: Similar angle to Panel 4, but now zoomed out a little more maybe, possibly seeing the backs of Janny and Parker on either side of the TV as they look on (maybe seeing over their shoulders) if you want. But the TV still has to be large enough to see what’s on it, which is now BUCK NEVENS himself, filming himself with the phone in his hand, seeing mostly a close up of his face, but also seeing his free hand twirling a finger around his ear in the traditional “This person’s completely insane” gesture. Should see the motion lines of his index finger twirling around by the side of his head. And I’m sure you’ll figure out a proper facial expression for that. He’s excited/happy and also giving a look like “She’s INSANE!” Your choice on what Buck actually looks like, but make him look fairly ugly and like a guy who thinks he’s cool but actually isn’t. The first balloon should point at like just the top of the television, while the second balloon’s pointer should go inside the TV to clearly show that it’s pointing at the Buck who we see on TV, pointing at his mouth.

BUCK (off-screen, radio balloon or pointer at least): AND LOOK, THAT’S ME!

BUCK (the actual one seen on the TV, radio balloon or pointer at least): STASIA WENT KOO-KOO!

Panel 6: Now we see Parker pointing at the TV and she looks a little angry/excited. Your choice on if we see anyone else or the TV in this shot. Could just be a close up of Parker.

PARKER: I KICKED THAT GUY ON MY WAY TO THE BATHROOM!
    ———–

I write very detailed scripts, as you can see, and then Eisu works his magic. For “Last Blood” I go into detail on the layout of the panels and even draw sketches to show the exact layout, but I don’t do that on MM. I’ve talked to Eisu at times about the overall story and he’s given a few good suggestions for the future that I’ll probably use.

Oh, and someone asked earlier about why it’s in Oklahoma. No real reason — just seemed like a good place!

  41. Lydia Says:

I can’t wait. By the way, that’s my computer. Please give it back.

  42. Bobby Crosby Says:

Yeah, luckily I got Dell and “Spider-Man 3″ to sponsor the video! Although that’s actually a “Spider-Man 2″ mouse pad.

  43. Namsab Says:

I love your scripts, Bobby! (Especially the description of Buck in this one XD)

  44. Eregnon Says:

This is a bit late, but I was wondering. Shouldn’t Parker’s name on the blogs have been “Here’syourlove” instead of “I’myourlove”? After all, if it’s in response to the song “Where’s my love?”, that would apply to a location, not a person. Now had the song been entitled “Who’s my Love” then “I’myourlove” would make sense.

  45. MobiusZero Says:

    Keep drawing *thumbs up*

  46. j Says:

how come people onlay give away crap comics on free comic book day

  47. Rollo Says:

Whoah… I am thrilled. What a detailed imagination you must have. Couldn’t do the same - I would have to doodle around until I have found out what I like most.

  48. Kris Says:

Excellently detailed scripting. I love that. I’m going to have to check out that thread about you needing an artist. Maybe I can help.
And, as always, the art is AMAZING.

  49. ThatOneChick Says:

I’m tempted to be a smart-ass and reply to ‘j’, but I just don’t have the heart to bicker with imbeciles and morons today.

… Wow. That’s a lot of detailing you put in your scripts. I’d never be able to do that…

  50. *sigh* Says:

    What does “onlay” mean?

  51. Bobby Crosby Says:

“Shouldn’t Parker’s name on the blogs have been ‘Here’syourlove’ instead of ‘I’myourlove’?”

Do all member names on forums make perfect sense? Parker isn’t exactly the smartest person in the world. She wanted to make it clear that she was Stasia’s love, which “here” doesn’t exactly do.

  52. Kris Says:

Actually, regarding the “I’myourlove” debacle… I had imagined the title of the song “Where’s my love?” not as a question for where the -concept- of love for her was, but where the person she -calls- “love” was. Like, “love” as a term of endearment. So when asking “Where’s my love?”, it would be like saying “Where’s my lover?” And, if that’s the case, Parker’s name makes sense, :)

  53. Bobby Crosby Says:

Thanks, Kris, I would have pointed that out if I hadn’t just woken up with a non-working brain still. That’s exactly what it is, and Parker’s response is exactly right.

  54. Valerie Says:

*Sigh* Still no page 19 yet… *Goes to cry in a corner*

Oh, and hey, Eisu, if you see this… I don’t mean to rush you or anything, because I understand that you’re working on this comic, and enough people are asking this as it is… but as far as NNP goes, are you on temporary hiatus? And if you are, does that mean that you won’t go back to updating until this comic is over? I’m not trying to complain or anything, it’s just that it’d be kinda nice to know. I still check every day to see if you’ve updated. XD

Anyway guys, as always, love the comic, love the art, love the storyline, and LOVE Parker! ♥

  55. Bobby Crosby Says:

I was just about to update the main post with news on that. Eisu’s been busy, but there’s a good chance we’ll have Page 19 within 24 hours or so. We’ll just put it up on Saturday and then hopefully still have Page 20 for Monday.

  56. Pixie Says:

*pouts* I love this comic but I miss the updates on No Pink Ponies too! *sighs and notes that it’s got to be hard to keep updating two comics now* I’m glad you’re doing this though! I love both comics and love the way the story unfolds on both.

  57. Schon R Boll Says:

Wow…….. now hooked on this comic to……. Stop making so good storys and such………. JK Keep all the good work….

  58. Kris Says:

    No problem, Bobby! :D

  59. Annekat Says:

buck is very creepy looking, fits his character it seems though.

Eisu, you are truly a master of capturing peoples expressions, it is amazing. (that is actually how i found NPP, through a link on Jolly Jack’s site saying the exact same thing)

each time a new page comes up it just makes me so happy and excited to read. you should both be so proud of yourselves that you are able to create this :)

  60. whomyra Says:

i ♥ when parker said ‘i kicked that guy on my way to the bathroom!’

    love marry me

  61. Fenyx Says:

why do ppl like parker so much? the best of this strip is the face of guy inthe “yes what?” Stasia looks so happy , like a dream come true xD

  62. Wolf Says:

    Ew…

I believe his “girl” is blind…

I agree. Parker needs to kick harder…

  63. chumash99 Says:

I ♥ this comic…and maybe Parker could take a few karate classes when this is over. :)
