Page 64: Turn Here
Thursday, March 13th, 2008Blah, I hate this page (the writing). Story’s gonna pick up the pace a lot from now on so we can finish it in time to have the graphic novel at the San Diego Comic-Con. Gotta go to print by late May, so you can expect about 25 pages in the next two and a half months.

I think the fact that she missed her turns says a lot right there. And, if you could stop teasing with the “are they legally hitched or not” that would be awesome. I really want to know…
March 13th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Cool strip looking foward to seeing more. Can;t wait for the full novel to come out
Keep up the good work, I’m really enjoying it.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
*squees* Eeeeeeeeeeee, she’s TOTALLY falling!!! *jumps up and down happily*
Her reaction was priceless when Janny said that about being legally married to him. She was SO stoked!! LOL
And, as always, even if Denny is just sitting there saying nothing, he completely ups the enjoyment factor well….because he’s Denny. ^^
You guys are rockin’ in the free world!!
March 13th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
I really liked this one. I think there’s a good bit of plot to it. Quite entertaining.
What a wonderfully obnoxious sign. Heh.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
I want to know if they are legaly married or not its keeping me suspense! Probaly why I keep coming back despite the great story line. So is the real test at the Umoja village that Stasia said she would put him through on the plain??? I want to see the test! Not that it matters she has already fallen for him and it makes me giddy. But I want to know how HE feels. Another thing to keep me in suspense.
Oh I know I didnt say this the last time but the monkey being lazey made me giggle espiacly since Parker said it when she was looking very lazy. ^_^
Yes I must say I love love love this web comic its in my top favorites next to Red String….^_^
March 13th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
I’m still curious to see how Guy’s going to be tested. OR is it one of those things where there is no actual test just like…a figure or speech?
Not sure if what I am saying makes much sense.
anywhoo~ I’m still chckin back on this hurr’ site :’3 I dont…remember where I saw it..
linked from F@nboy$ or…hm
Now I’m rambling…
March 13th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
First time poster,
The writing isn’t so bad. The dialog is necessary, it doesn’t have to be over the top. Sometimes too much of that makes it cheesy.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
“So is the real test at the Umoja village that Stasia said she would put him through on the plain???”
The test is a series of things, some of which have already happened off-screen and will be referred to later. It’s mostly just to see if he’s a good person or not, along with a couple fun things to test his personality and sense of adventure (one of those fun things happens at Umoja soon).
“The writing isn’t so bad. The dialog is necessary, it doesn’t have to be over the top.”
My problem with it isn’t how the specific lines are said, but just the scene in general for many reasons, like if it fits in properly for the whole story at this moment to basically reveal that Stasia likes him a lot and appears to want to be married to him. It’s one of those scenes that I’m 95% sure I’ll want to change/remove/move down the road, but it will be too late, since that would involve needing to change many other things as well. The story needs to end in about 25 pages (so we can finish it in time for Comic-Con), so everything needed to be sped up in terms of bringing the comic to a conclusion. I write them page by page, one at a time, still working on the script for Page 65 right now, so that can make it very frustrating at times and a bit scary, when you know that no real changes can be made, since the art’s already done. And then once I decided to have this scene happen like this, I wanted more dialogue for it, but it would have required more panels/pages, so I had to cut out some stuff that I thought was good/funny, which was annoying, because every bit of space is important now, trying to cram so much into the last 25 pages or so.
To go into a little more detail about the page and what was removed from the dialogue, originally I was going to have Janny’s response to “It was barbaric” be “You don’t like barbarians? Too much like pirates?” and then Stasia was going to repeat that she’s against violence and that that’s one of the reasons she’s in Kenya, to stop violence like that, and Janny was going to say it’s ridiculous to compare the two and ask Stasia why she’s looking for a reason to reject Guy. A little more talk led to Janny realizing that Stasia’s not looking for reasons to reject Guy, but she’s looking for a reason to be OK with it if he rejects her, so she could say “Who cares — he was just a violent barbarian anyway!” and blah blah blah. All that would have basically required another full page, though, so it was condensed to this version. Never actually wrote out the other version completely, but had most of it planned in my head.
March 13th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Your “in my head” version was much better, the “too much like pirates” made me laugh a lot even without drawing.
I understand you can’t put everything you said in the comic if space is needed but the pirate joke can’t be an exception ?
March 13th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
The comic is going to end in 25 pages? That’s really soon. Aw, I’ll be disappointed when it ends… though I hope it’ll become a movie so I can watch it! ( …am I being stupid again and have missed something? I wasn’t aware that it was going to be so short.)
March 13th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
The blog post for Page 1 begins, “Welcome to Marry Me! This is a romantic comedy graphic novel which will run about 80 pages . . .” The first GN will now be about 90 pages. Most likely there will be a sequel of some sort at some point.
March 13th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
is there seriously a sign for the village?
I can’t wait to see the next pages up! I love this comic so much!
March 13th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
“is there seriously a sign for the village?”
Don’t know. They do get some tourists, which they want, since they sell them beaded necklaces that they make, so I assume there’s probably some sort of sign.
March 13th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
AWW!! Love Stasia’s Reaction… she seems like she really is falling for Guy already!
I hope it turns out OK and he feels the same and maybe they will be legally married … and if they aren’t they’ll get legally married..
LOL to her missing the turn with the sign that was like… 2 times bigger than the truck! That really DOES say a lot.
March 13th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
I serisouly adore the two last pannels.
Super cute!
March 13th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
A sobering moment amidst the chaos.
March 13th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Oh my! It’s going to end so soon? This shock probably serves me right for never starting to read the blog of a comic until I’m caught up in the archives. On the other hand I’m that much more anxious to find out what’ll happen.
No more voting button to see the bonus rough draft? I always enjoyed seeing what kind of outlines were given to work from
March 13th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
The TWC web site was down for a while earlier today, but I think it’s back up now. Might put up that link again in a minute.
March 13th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Maybe this is just me, but for some reason their chins all seem off in pretty much every panel, especially the fourth and fifth. Other than that, great page. I liked Bobby’s longer version much more though…
March 13th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Just discovered this a few days ago - an ad in Last Blood from a WOWIO download sent me here. And I had just heard about Last Blood from a link from Ghastly’s Ghastly Comic. At any rate, love the concept and the story, but I will say that the artwork is starting to seem rushed - especially this page - it was far cleaner and gorgeous in the beginning. My 2c…
March 13th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
All right, now I’m thrilled to know things are going to be progressing, and may actually have to do the eight hour drive to San Diego to immediately pick up a book. Damn you for your greatness, both of you. You’ve interested me beyond what my jaded personality would’ve preferred.
March 13th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Denny is awesome. ‘Nuff said.
“The blog post for Page 1 begins, “Welcome to Marry Me! This is a romantic comedy graphic novel which will run about 80 pages . . .” The first GN will now be about 90 pages. Most likely there will be a sequel of some sort at some point.”
My guess is because you want to make a few revisions such as the changes you wish to make to a few pages or so?
Anyhow, I suppose the extended version is probably going to be available only in book format. And honestly, I’d pay just to see the parts that were omitted. Such as the scene you just described in your earlier post. Despite your little mishaps here and there, meaning the parts you say are bad and foiled and make you go, “CURSE YOU, PAGE LIMIT!” It’s overall a wonderful piece.
Any cartoonist would want to cover all of his bases with his ideas, but anyone working with that field or at least, familiar with it knows that you can only do so much with the acquitted amount of space.
I can only offer you and Eisu encouragement, and attempt to ease your nerves about stressing the last 25 pages or so. So I have to ask: How much time should be deemed appropriate for the following events?
Umoja?
Janny’s kid?
Dear ol’ Dad?
We all know the standard form of romantic comedy. Someone should be in the unknown. It’s what makes them interesting. In this one, Guy is that person. To me, half the time, he’s been a bit like a piece of meat. Nice guy, sure. But I honestly would like to know a little more of him or whatnot… He is quite an enigma at this point…
March 13th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
you had me dying on the last frame. very well done, beautiful.
March 13th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
“My guess is because you want to make a few revisions such as the changes you wish to make to a few pages or so?”
No, there won’t be any changes, or at least nothing significant, probably nothing at all. The reason it’s now going to be about 90 pages instead of “about 80″ is simply because that’s the way it turned out. When I wrote the first blog post I had almost no clue what would happen for about 60% of the story, had no clue they’d ever go to Africa.
“Anyhow, I suppose the extended version is probably going to be available only in book format.”
Won’t be any extended version.
“I’d pay just to see the parts that were omitted. Such as the scene you just described in your earlier post.”
There actually is no real page deadline — the problem is simply time, and we can only do so many pages by late May, and preferably it really should be done by early May, or just ASAP. It was solicited for April and we just got the orders from Diamond, so it’s going to be very late no matter what, but we’ve known that for a while now and it’s not a huge deal — but what is a huge deal is having it for Comic-Con, which 100% has to happen. If we could do a page per day, I’d happily make the story 100 pages and be done in five weeks. I unfortunately write pretty slow, though, and Eisu is a very busy man, so I have to write the story based on the assumption that we’re probably only going to be able to do three pages per week at MOST in the next two and a half months. So hopefully we’ll be able to reach Page 93 or 94 if need be, but we can’t cut that print deadline too close — hopefully we can wrap the story up by like 88 or 89. So anyway, that scene I just described will almost certainly never be made. It would require totally re-drawing multiple pages basically and the problem is time.
“How much time should be deemed appropriate for the following events? Umoja? Janny’s kid? Dear ol’ Dad?”
Just as short as possible, and there’s quite a bit more than just those things happening, unfortunately.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Ah! The wonders of inner distractions while you are driving a car! Oh how much trouble I almost got in several times . . . I’d hate to try and call a tow-truck out THERE xD
March 13th, 2008 at 11:41 pm
“Maybe this is just me, but for some reason their chins all seem off in pretty much every panel, especially the fourth and fifth.”
it’s not just you, I am trying out a new kind of style in constructing faces, to make it more stylized so that I don’t screw it up over and over in one page as I have done multiple times.
March 14th, 2008 at 12:30 am
Now, turn AROUND.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:02 am
Well, Denny’s reaction was the win XD
March 14th, 2008 at 5:28 am
cute story sorry to see it ending. thanks for all the time you have put in to it.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:41 am
Honestly, Bobby, I love this page because it actually made me laugh
March 14th, 2008 at 8:03 am
I would say “No, the page is awesome!” But I would be lying. It is a necessary page, even if it’s not a great one. It moves the story along.
Side note: Stasia’s as bad at navigating as I am!
March 14th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Funny
I have the feeling that, even if they are not really married, Stasia would stay with Guy… the first symptoms of the love sickness are clearly visible
March 14th, 2008 at 9:00 am
D’AWWWWWWWWWW!!! She’s so cute, and in love!!! Oh, gosh…absolutely love her face when she’s she’s says “Am I?” yet another D’AAAWWWWW!!! moment.
Also, Is it just me or does Denn’y face keep getting longer and skinnier? O.o
March 14th, 2008 at 11:00 am
dennys face in the fifth panel is great. nice job eisu!
March 14th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
I would expect there to be like a road sign or something but…that is a freaking HUGE sign! Not necessarily unrealistic, but its the sort of sign the town would put up for a big tourist destination rather than the sort of sign the government would put up to mark the road.
March 14th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I just remembered from studying about Kwanzaa in school that Umoja means “unity”. Was it coincidence or random?
March 14th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Oh come on, of course he likes her… I think… I mean if he didn’t he wouldn’t just be dropping everything to run off to Africa with her… come on… I hope they are married, that would be so cute….^.^
March 14th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
“Not necessarily unrealistic, but its the sort of sign the town would put up for a big tourist destination”
Which is exactly what it is/what it’s trying to be. Look up Umoja on YouTube.
March 14th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
/me thinks.
i’m not sure, but i doubt there is such straight and narrow roads in Africa >_>
and “turn” it’s doubtfull that it would be so…. well you know…
March 14th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
This is awesome!
March 14th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Hey, where’s my hourly update. >:|
Just kidding though, not the strongest writing on this page, but it definitely solidifies the feelings that we were questioning.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
“i’m not sure, but i doubt there is such straight and narrow roads in Africa”
The picture I used for reference (provided by Bobby) has a road that’s pretty straight and narrow.
March 14th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
am I the only one who thought panel 3 didn’t look “totally stoked”? I thought the expression on stasia’s face was so great because my first reaction was like “wow she’s so happy” but not in the looney toons kind of way, but less flashy (more subtle?) kind of expression where when she screams “am I!?” she’s clearly happy to everyone else but maybe she doesn’t even realise she smiled, like it was completely natural for her to be happy and it just sort of filtered into everything else she was doing; or, it’s kind of cliche, like it’s “what she’s always wanted” without knowing it
I felt like that panel was great because it’s a rare but real expression that just feels so sweet because it’s… I dunno, so innocent
the above translates to “wow Eisu nice job on art, especially on the 3rd panel!”
March 15th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Nice page guys.
March 15th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Brian — Nope, I noticed Stasia looked really, excited in the 3rd pannel, also!!
Undoubtedly Kawaii <33333333
March 15th, 2008 at 11:47 am
I love this! more pages.. faster, faster, faster!!!
March 15th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
bob- No! Slower, slower, slower. If we only have 25 pages we should try and savor them.
March 15th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Hi Guys! First time poster but long time reader- loved the last page! the pic of the monkey was cute but this one is awesome! <3
:p last panel is funny too!
If Denny was real I would shake his humongous hand for that look on his face in the 6th panel and in the first one I can just see him saying something like
‘Yeah it’s all cool dawg…’
Thanks most sincere, <- sorry don’t have a clue what thats about..
Soph
March 15th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
honestly when i read the title i thought it would be awful, but complete opposite, it’s written so well!
March 15th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
The condition of roads in Africa all depend on who built them and who’s in charge of maintaining them, just like everywhere else. If there are no insurmountable obstacles, then the road will be straight. If there’s something that’s in the way, the road will go around it. And whether they’re straight or not, they are usually narrow. There aren’t many multiple lane roads outside of the big cities.
With Kenya being mostly savannah, if my memory is correct (I was about five or six years old when I was there, it’s all kind of fuzzy), the roads would be rather straight. And that kind of intersection is rather common, actually.
March 15th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Stasia also obviously has American driving habits. She’s got her lights on even though the sun in shining.
March 15th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Awesome update…
… and after viewing the YouTube video that Mr. Crosby posted on the previous comic (which had a horrible sound mix), I can’t wait, as long as the guys don’t yell out the infamous name from an internet meme a while back…
…also, Bryn, we have no proof that the sun is actually up yet in this comic, unless Stasia has a truck fully loaded to make runs to Omaja whenever she’s in Africa, it took some time to load it up, which might mean that they just missed Stasia & Janny’s dad (which wouldn’t surprise me). Of course, it’s Mr. Crosby’s comic, so if he says that it’s midday noon local time in the comic, I won’t mind…
March 15th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Stasia also obviously has American driving habits. She’s got her lights on even though the sun in shining
—
I think that’s dirt…?
March 16th, 2008 at 1:02 am
I love it.
March 16th, 2008 at 8:43 am
I’m saying the sun is up based on the lighting in the comic. That’s not night-time lighting, that’s daytime lighting.
And yeah, that could be dust being kicked up by the tires. I’d forgot about that possibility. Meh. Still. My family has been stopped a few times by policemen just so they can ask why in heck we have our lights on when it’s daytime.
Note that my experience is mainly over in Cote d’Ivoire, which is across the continent. I dunno if the police behave differently over in Kenya. I’d have to ask my uncle. He knows.
As to the comic itself, I like. I agree that it’s a little rushed, but, as so many have said before, such is the price paid for a page limit. Overall it works out well, though. A good job done within the constraints place upon it.
March 16th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Awwww…
Stasia has feelings for Guy! Too sweet!
March 16th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Haha… Denny’s face in the second to last panel is priceless. :’D
March 16th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
And a sidenote on a random afterthought… they should go to Ghana. Because Ghana is cool~ and that’s where I’m from. xD
March 17th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Rassum frassum, my scanner just died mid-scanning page 65!!
Now I’ll have to use the office scanner before I get to buy a new scanner which can only happen after I get my next paycheck which means the pages will come a bit late for the next few weeks… apologies
March 17th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Well… later than it usually is anyway…
March 17th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
nice i love how you won’t let anyone know if they are married or not
March 17th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Downloaded the two PDFs on a whim. Read both straight through. Great story, great art! Had to come to the site to catch up. Can’t wait for more. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:51 am
woot!! I’ll be there buying your graphic novel!! I already have it from wowo, but like seriously, I wanna beable to look at it on my shelf and hug it. I love your comic
March 18th, 2008 at 5:50 am

too bad rhat wowio only works in united states i would love to be able to buy the comic book too :/
March 18th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Why do you say that you hate the writing ? Story-wise I think that’s the b est one out of the last dozen of pages ! Well, that’s just my opinion.
March 18th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
“Why do you say that you hate the writing ?”

And the full GN will be available to order from this site in July.
March 24th, 2008 at 7:11 am
Thanks to Bobby for posting a bunch of links below the most recent LB. This further proves your brilliance. To be able to write such different stories, and write them so well, shows astounding ability. You also seem to have a knack for finding artists who style fits the plot marvelously.
Drinking blood actually makes a lot of sense. It has tons of nutritional value: proteins, minerals etc. already in the blood itself, plus all the glucose and other food it carries between the cells.
“Normal” cultures don’t drink blood because, well, it is kind of gross. We also have a gag reflex if we taste too much human blood (don’t know if it would still work with non-human blood, depends on how different it tastes, I suppose). Also, as Bill M. Mentioned, the Bible does ban drinking blood, of any animal. Whether this fits into the “don’t eat pork” category of rules, which were sort of negated after Christ, I don’t know.
About the tests: does Stasia have them all planned out well in advance? Or are they spur of the moment? Is it a mixture, i.e. she planned the blood as soon as she knew she was going to Umoja, but having Guy load the truck by himself was sudden inspiration?
Informatively yours, Sci Guy
PS, the fans of this comic seem much more relaxed than LB. They do appeal to different demographics, I suppose.
March 24th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
They might seem that way from this page, but in general both fans are similarly un-relaxed. Had some gigantic disgusting fights with horrible assholes in these comments.
March 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
i keep coming back to this page. definately my favourite.
March 28th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Great comic. I love it and I cant wait to get more of it and I plan on buying it in book when it comes out. I love the detail even of the steering wheel on the correct side. Keep them coming and I will keep on visiting and purchasing them.
March 28th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
-laughs- last panel: best panel ever.
May 10th, 2008 at 7:53 am
“Blah, I hate this page (the writing).” Don’t say that! This page was very well-written. It was cool and understated, especially in panels 4-7. Loved Stasia’s reaction to Janny’s question…she likes him! She really, really likes him!
June 24th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
found your site on del.icio.us today and really liked it.. i bookmarked it and will be back to check it out some more later ..
