In my opinion, given the legions on each side, is that the dialect/language issue should be considered a matter of personal preference, clearly no one is convincing anyone else of anything. (Although I do like bugstopmer’s use of Britannica to back the point, made a lot of sense to me)

No, you moron, it’s about someone in the comments (not me) calling Swahili “an African dialect” in an extremely innocent way, clearly not meaning anything bad by it and clearly not implying in any way that Africa is a country and not a continent, but for SOME REASON someone else responded in a super angry way and just went off on the guy telling him to never say that again in his life and that he’s such a moron for saying it and so on. It doesn’t matter in ANY WAY what anyone’s personal definition is — the point was that there was no reason in the world for Mabs to say what he said, no matter if the original person who said “an African dialect” was technically “right” or not. Even if he was “wrong,” he clearly meant no harm by it in any way, so WHO GIVES A SHIT???

It’s also about assholes like you acting 100 million percent sure that you’re right about a topic as vague as this where it’s basically impossible for your side to be right, since the definition is so broad. Saying Swahili is an African dialect might not be the BEST way to describe it and it may make someone sound certainly like less than an expert on the topic, but it can’t be 100% WRONG in just general conversation in the comments for a fucking comic when the definition is so broad, being based on what someone considers a family of languages or not. Africa has tons of languages that came from Africa and are mostly spoken in Africa — how the heck can you not consider African languages a family of languages, or at least how could you be SO SURE THAT THEY’RE NOT that you say “No, Bobby, it’s not a dialect”?

there is NO african dialect, there are african languages, but as someone above pointed outtheat persian and and french are indo-european dialects, sure you can say that.

but then swahili is a bantu dialect, and bantu is a bantoid dialect and bantoid is an atlantic congo dialect which is a niger-congo dialect. (i skipped a few levels in the family groups)

niger-congo is on the same linguistic tier as indo-european.

there are dialects of english, and there are dialects of swahili.

sure, one COULD call english a germanic dialect or an indo-european dialect, NO ONE DOES. we may talk about dialects of english, but english is considered to be a language. so why is it awful that someone says, hold up. swahili is a language. not a dialect?

anyway, my main point is, you want to quote the dictionary and say that swahili can be considered a dialect, go ahead, but know what it’s a diaclect of. there is NO “african” language.
