MARRY ME comic page

Page 83: Whut-Oh!

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Almost certainly gonna make the graphic novel 91 pages now. We’ve had to keep cutting it down so we can finish it in time. Look for eight more pages in the next eight to nine days.

105 Responses to “Page 83: Whut-Oh!”

  1. Anko Says:

    I like Stasia’s dad.

  2. Gyscos Says:

    Wooo ! Sooo fast !
    Great ! :D thanks :)

  3. mmirage Says:

    Duh duh duh…

I am so looking forward to the next page. *grin*

  4. Satoshieyes Says:

    this is.. getting interesting..

  5. Danthega Says:

Damn, I wish I’d live in the US… Then I could’ve helped out by downloading the comic by WOWIO… But anyways

I love it ^^ It’s a really great comic :) Keep up the good work

  6. Dark Chili Says:

Wow, Stasia looks devistated…. who thinks they’re gonna actually get married within the next 8 pages?

  7. Shaun Says:

Look at both of their faces. She is shocked and Guy is resigned. I think she really wanted to be married and I think that he knew that they might not be but started to fall in love. Well I cant wait till the next comic.

  8. norman728 Says:

WHAT!? I really meant to say WHAT?! after all this time they aren’t married?

I really do hope there is more to this that just that….. Please Bobby Please

  9. Lexxi Says:

    awww v_v

    so sad.

    *wanted them to be married*

  10. Yamez Says:

    @ Dark Chili
    *Raises hand*

  11. Matt Says:

I didn’t want to say anything, because the premise was fun, but this is how it would be in reality. To be legally married, you have to get a marriage license beforehand.

  12. Bobby Crosby Says:

No, Matt, there’s lots of ways to be legally married and you certainly don’t need a marriage license beforehand in all cases, but anyway, Page 29 was pretty clear.

  13. Christopher Says:

“Cutting it down” makes me sad. I understand and support the business pressures you’re under, but it always twinges a little to think that a creator has to give up ideas for the sake of time or space.

That said, I’ve heard creators say that the pressure to distill a work to its essence can make it better because the unnecessary fluff gets cut, and what remains is more true to the spirit of the work. I only wish it could happen as a natural part of the creative process, rather than because of time constraints.

Great stuff, Bobby, can’t wait to get the dead tree edition.

  14. Honno Says:

It was obvious from the start that they were not married. Else there wouldn’t be the great climatic “Ana will you marry me?” phrase near the ending.

  15. beth Says:

i’m a bit disappointed and it looks like ana and guy are too. but there’s definitely enough time for them to remedy that situation…

  16. JKPS613 Says:

That sucks. I wish she was lying.

But I kind of expected it all along. I mean, it could have gone both ways, but I’m expecting them to end up married. It seems like everyone else is expecting it as well.

  17. Sprainogre Says:

*roll eyes* Come on people, it’s a romantic comedy. Comedies end in marriage. Hence, this is a chance for Guy to really propose to her, and for them to have an actual wedding. Guy should probably also ask her dad’s permission first, just to be classy…

  18. Kelmer Says:

guy was falling for her. hes not going to let her go so easily

  19. Pamela Says:

    Awwww, nuts. *snaps fingers dejectedly*

I think Guy’s just gonna blow her dad away. He’s not a self centered shithead like Christian, and he’s like Clark Kent: a cute nerdy sweetheart. Like Lois Lane asks him in the first Superman movie: Any more like you back home??

Were I Stasia, I’d sink my talons into him and never let go…no matter how much Daddy Dearest tries to pry him out. hehe.

  20. Gaia Says:

When I rule the world, you can write as much as you want and pay no nevermind to deadlines. :)

I’m adoring this story - thanks for all your hard work and creativity! Hope you are recovering well.

  21. Zahooee Says:

Too bad…I was always betting on the “common law” thing.

There may still be “blue laws” out there where “representing yourselves” as married could kick in the whole “common law marriage” thing, but I think they’re mostly nonexistent anymore.

    Hell…I’m no lawyer, but I was hoping…

  22. Calia Says:

As others have said, it was fairly predictable. Legally, this is almost assuredly how it would happen.

That knowledge doesn’t soften the blow any, though, and I’m sad they aren’t really married :(

GUY! HERE’S YOUR CHANCE! Tackle dad before he gets in the room and say “I”M MARRYING YOUR DAUGHTER WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!”
C’mon, you know you want to, you sweet nerd you ;)

  23. Calia Says:

    PS:
I just saw the new Hulk movie this weekend, and all I could think of looking at the last panel was “DAD ANGRY! DAD SMASH!”
    lol.

  24. The Tactless Kitsune Says:

So stupid excited about Comic-con! Will both you and Eisu be there?

  25. Bobby Crosby Says:

Looks like just me, but maybe still a slight chance of Eisu making it — he’ll probably see your question and answer at some point. Owen of “Last Blood” will probably be there too, I think.

  26. Kat Says:

I hope they do get married before the end comes… I do I do.

  27. Sharokk Says:

Wow! I just stumbled across this comic from a link on another comic site, and I’ve got to say it’s great. Looking forwards to seeing how it goes from here!
    -Sharokk

  28. Tseng Says:

Gah! I duck and cover to finish my novel (yay! Tis finished!) and when I look up three pages have posted! Which is awesome but . . . wow. Feast or famine here.

Anyways, I have some predictions. Because I do that.

    1. Stasia’s father reveals that he’s suffering from a fatal disease that causes his normally immensely broad shoulders to deflate. His dying wish - that Stasia would marry his geeky assistant.

    2. Stasia finally washes that pink striped top that she’s been wearing over the dusty African savanna. Guy realizes that she actually cleans up nice and leaves her, to find a girl that his scruffy almost-beard can truly connect with.

    3. Christian’s fainting spell is caused by a rare strain of African virus, the beginning of an outbreak. Stasia, Guy, and Janny watch helplessly as first Stasia’s father, then Parker succumb to the deadly strain. Finally, Guy reveals that he’s actually Doogie Howser and manages to trace the virus back to its original source - giraffe riding monkeys!

    4. There is no #4. Ever.

    5. Baby Parker grows up to see a world completely enslaved by robotic corporation-owned pop-stars. The only hope of mankind, Stasia, died sad and alone. Baby Parker swears off men after her lover is killed by Hunter-Killer Grrl Rockers and becomes a lesbian, then steals RIAA-proprietary time-travel technology to send her new, lesbian self back through time. Her mission: Befriend Guy, and through a series of comical misunderstandings and zany hijinks make certain he marries Stasia, thus giving her the will to fight on. But little does Parker know that the RIAA has sent its deadliest team of boy-band assassins back in time to destroy her and break Stasia’s heart forever. Their code name: Stately Manor.

  29. Alex Says:

Is that Guy behind Ana’s dad, or is it some other brown haired dude with glasses?

    Just asking.

  30. Bobby Crosby Says:

    Alex: http://www.marrymemovie.com/main/2007/10/28/page-49-alaska/

  31. the captain Says:

sorry Tseng but baby parker is a boy.

    dun dun duuunn

so u ahve to change #5

  32. Prof B Hunnydew Says:

So what is Janny saying? That she doesn’t want Anna and Guy to be together, or that she doesn’t want Stasia to dump him, because they aren’t married? Why drop this bomb, Now?

Oh boy, Daddy is looking like an angry bull. Maybe Guy has some “Matador” training… or just good counselor experience with the dads of his students…could help. or Parker could just punch him..

Wait, if they not married, Is there a serial to this book?

    PBH

  33. Angus the cat Says:

So, I love this comic (totally addicted to it, actually…) and I was just wondering if there was some way that we might be able to see the pages that got cut? Like, after comic-con? Maybe some kind of extended-addition, like with the Lord of the Rings movies? :D

Just the thought of a fan desperate for more. Keep up the good work!

Also, I don’t know who it was that said it, but I, too, am wondering why Janny chose this moment to break the news to Ana…

  34. Angus the cat Says:

Oops, just figured out who said it… Sorry Prof B Hunnydew!

  35. Rune Says:

Not being married isn’t really a problem, is it? He still has proposed, she still said yes, they can make it official any time. Even get it done properly. That wouldn’t be a bad thing. :)

  36. Pink Says:

I don’t know why, but I’ve grown so attached to Parker. She’s like the annoying little brother I always secretly wanted.

  37. Mandi Says:

dad o’clock= 12 or 10 depending on who your refering to

or oh shit he’s here o’clock works too

  38. Alicia Says:

    TToTT

  39. Paxy Says:

    OMG…
    wow,
can’t wait for the next update.

  40. Bobby Crosby Says:

    “So what is Janny saying?”

Exactly what she’s saying — don’t take this as a sign and think you have to stick with whatever it is, because Stasia apparently has a history of acting like that. She’s just telling her to think it through on its own merits and not worry about if they’re technically married or not right now.

    “Why drop this bomb, Now?”

Don’t get it — why not? When’s a better time? Had to tell her eventually.

“Wait, if they not married, Is there a serial to this book?”

    Huh?

“I was just wondering if there was some way that we might be able to see the pages that got cut?”

Doesn’t work like that. No “cut out pages” — everything’s just tightened, shortened. There’s no perfect page long scenes that are removed — all scenes are just shortened.

  41. Avram Says:

    My predictions are as follows:

    Option #1
There’s no way they are going to get married in the next eight pages. Clearly the only way to conclude this in a satisfying way is having them begin a relationship that might eventually lead to marriage, but not go for the balls-out sudden marriage that caused problems in the first place. Think Wedding Crashers, at the end of which Owen Wilson says “I’m not asking you to marry me; I’m just asking you not to marry this guy.”

    Option #2
I imagine Guy will begin to confront Stasia’s father, continuing the topos of his defending her from aggressive men who’ve taken advantage of her in the past, but then Stasia will have to fight her own battle. Maybe Guy finally offers some proper advice, imploring Blondie to stand up to her dad.

In either of these cases, the presence of Big Dad’s grandson is going to prove a distraction that might allow the characters to avoid full-on conflict. Who knows how this dude is going to react to that. If he came to the hospital, though, he has to know what is up–which could only mean that one of the main characters called him to let him know. Get ready for a crazy twist there. The tip had to come from Guy or Stasia.

  42. Bobby Crosby Says:

Just gonna say that almost everything Avram said was wrong and/or nonsensical.

  43. Kodoji Says:

OMFG, I started to read a few hours ago, and I need to say to you guys, bobby and eisu that you´re fuckin´ awesome

sorry, but my english is horrible >_<, I´m a brazilian guy, I understand all the plot, but I don´t know how to speak… well, I liked a lot of your work, and since now I´ll visit your site every day.

  44. chumash99 Says:

Oh. Shit. I do *not* like the look on Dad’s face. But, at least Stasia & Guy aren’t really married…yet. ;) I wonder what happened to that bus driver… :)

  45. JessieM Says:

awww they are not married??? D:
much sadness… I wonder if she will lie to dad anyway?

  46. Szaxe Says:

I just started reading like an hour ago and… omg, I love you.

I love Eisu’s No Pink Ponies, and even though that one’s on hiatus, this is a great substitute. I can’t wait to see what the dad does x3

  47. LazerWulf Says:

I had a feeling that they weren’t married.

I also have a feeling that Stasia’s gonna want to marry Guy for real after this. If not in the next 8 pages, then there should at least be the indication of a marriage by then.

And if they don’t get married, there better be a damned good alternative for it. Having them go their separate ways would be so… anti-climatic, and totally defeat the purpose of calling the comic “Marry Me.”

  48. FenrisWolf Says:

“Trouble at Dad O’Clock!” I just love that line. I also love that the inevitable confrontation between Dad and Guy has been held off long enough for us to get a pretty good impression of Stasia’s and Guy’s personalities. I have the feeling that Dad’s going to try run his usual steamroller/scorched-earth routine on his daughter, and when he gets to Guy he’s going to…bounce. Something tells me our baby-delivering guidance counselor doesn’t intimidate worth a damn. The resulting chaos should be entertaining

  49. Bobby Crosby Says:

MINOR SPOILER AT BOTTOM OF THIS COMMENT . . .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

Stasia and her dad don’t say a word to each other in the entire book.

  50. tangentdi Says:

Is it just me or did Guy hear what Janny said? He really looks like he did.

  51. Bobby Crosby Says:

He did, yes. See how he’s trying to listen to them against the wall near the door there in Panel 2?

  52. Archirat Says:

The presence of Christian is a big pointer to me. I think that he probably rushed in (being stupid) to try to ‘win back’ Stasia again except he fainted when he saw the miracle of life.

Christian was there in Africa, Christian saw Gay and Stasia together and heard that Stasia was married to the big one. He is the one that probably got in contact with Stasia’s Dad. “Why should I put up a front? She’s already married!” Stasia’s dad might know that she wasn’t married and also that she was in Africa.

Pretty certain that it’s all happy romance. Unless Guy is a sadistic murderer/ zombie.

  53. Torinaura Says:

Haha, everyone thinks Guy is going to propose… but I think Parker will take this as a sign and propose to Stasia.

-guffaws- Kidding, I foresee a proposal… or some sort of eloping. ;)

  54. Torinaura Says:

PS. I think Hunnydew meant “Sequel” ;P

  55. MobiusZero Says:

    not yet married ?

  56. Skell Says:

Guy seems to be sad… Aww, and I so wished they were married. Though, because of this they can have better start, you know, first get to know themselves better, and then marry - and I really hope it will be that way :).

  57. Alex Says:

Thanks Bobby Bro, cool comic you’ve got here. And I did know there was the assistant but I wasn’t sure if it was him or Guy stressing out due to the Pop on the warpath.

  58. Calia Says:

    Torinaura:
Haha, I didn’t even think of that. Eloping would totally be Stasia’s style- *especially* if Guy could convince her to stand up to dad.

Very interesting spoiler, by the way… Bobby, you awful tease. That’s just mean, now I can’t stop thinking what could possibly happen to cause that.

  59. Prez-Liz Says:

Awww. Ana looks crushed! Well, it was really the only thing you could do, story-wise. The “are they or aren’t they” suspense ran its course, and now we have the “how is she going to win him back” suspense.

  60. Shaun Says:

I really want to see her dad ignore Ana and Guy’s situation for a minute. I would love to see him just walk by Ana to see his new Grandson and make sure Janny is doing well. As odd as this is I like the Dad. The man flew all the way to Africa to try to “fix” this situation, despite having unfinished business in Asia, because he is worried for his kids. I think he not only looks furious but he look exhausted and stressed as hell, for good reason.

  61. Drake Says:

I came across your comic by a whim, wow i am blown away, love the story so far. Keep it up man!

  62. welsh-witch Says:

what’s the likelyhood of Janny and Ana’s dad overlooking the ‘married daughter’ problem just for a second, so he can celebrate his first grandchild?

  63. Rebecca Says:

Looking forward to the next page! :D

  64. ivan Says:

I notice that many of you seem to think that Janny doesn’t want them to be married. But Janny did say “I don’t want you to take this as a sign, all right?”

she then proceeds to spill the beans that the two of them are not married. I took it as she sees them as a match, but that it sucks they aren’t married.

  65. UmmonTL Says:

This is a romantic Comedy, of course it is possible that they get married in the remaining pages. Hell it could probably be done in two, one for the conversation with dad, probably ending with him disapproving of Guy and either threatening them mildly or telling them to do whateverthehelltheywant. And the last page, big panel of them just married, “one month later” in the corner and a last punchline from Parker.

Of course an ending so short would be far too simple for the story so far, would be dissappointing to have them run away from Stasia’s dad for most of the comic and then let the final clash happen in just one page.
Anyway i love the comic, Bobby I would recommend a vacation when it’s done. Looking forward to the remaining pages.

  66. Bartimaeus Says:

BAM! Now it comes out. Denoument, here we come!!

  67. Marina Says:

Excuse me, I didn’t get that - 8 pages to come? What is then? Is the comic over then? Is everything ruined forever?

Anyways… I like that comic really much. It’s not just a series of puns, but a real story and it is about subtle things and personalities.
My favorite character is guy. For example for his face in panel 7.
    You’re good at showing emotion.

It’s not that bad that they aren’t married. They do love each other, right? ;)

  68. batgirl Says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  69. Pram the Oracle Says:

    Uh oh, Gumshoe’s pissed!

  70. ko Says:

    mmirage Says:

    Duh duh duh…

I am so looking forward to the next page. *grin*

    —————————————

    Hell yeah, me too!!

  71. Andrew Says:

Well since you two meant to envision this as a movie anyway, there had to be SOME kind of ending. I just wish there is some way to wrap it up so it doesn’t get depressing.

  72. NadiaZeta Says:

    O.O oh Daddy is arrive.

  73. Rich Says:

Just wanted to say I love the comic and I am saddened that it will be ending soon. At the same time, I am anxious to see how it does end.

keep up the great work and thank you.

  74. Ethan Says:

I like the way Janny looks in the third panel. And wow, not married after all, huh? I can’t wait to see what happens.

  75. Shinzen Says:

    Crazy Theory time!

Brown haired dude is the father of Janny’s baby.

    There we go.

  76. Oceanofnoise Says:

Cliffhanger’s are the bane of my life… I just want to be impatient and know what happens the suspense of 24 hours is horrible, I do not know how I shall make it.

The comic gets better and better … daily now.

  77. Jen Says:

Huh. I didn’t think Guy would be the type to listen in on conversations (he’s so noble! Yet…curious?).

Also, I both loathe and love Stasia’s dad. XD

  78. Desirae Says:

I am sadden atthe fact that they aren’t married. I know many people had said that. BUt come on it just would have been wonderful. But I do hear wedding bells in the future. As long as Stasia’s dad doesn’t kill Guy. THen again I have a feeling he is going to impress the old man. It’s just something Guy would do since he is like…perfect.

Is Christian going to pop up randomly trying to stake claim on Stasia now that she isn’t officialy married. I am sure Stasia’s dad knows about that…

Oh and artisticly wise….the expressions on Stasia’s and Guys face when Janny tells the truth…or is it the truth. Is thisa test to see if Stasia really cares for guy? (the ever hopeful I am) …. she is probaly telling the truth *pouts*

Parker…adult parker is adorable you just want to hug her. *random*

  79. kittin Says:

will you write an other comic after the book is done? You are very good at it and I would love to read more of your work.

  80. Desirae Says:

I just relized I left a sentance unfinished. I wanted to say the expression on Stasia’s and Guy’s face is just….so sad cuase they look crush and dejected. Wonderful work you can feel the emotion pouring off the page.

  81. chumash99 Says:

Guy isn’t perfect, but he’s more of a man than Christian could ever hope to be. Guy *will* propose to Stasia and they *will* get married! ‘Nuff said! :)

  82. Istra Says:

My money says Dad makes Stasia cry and Guy goes “RAAAAR!!!1″ and makes a big confession and they get married and live happily ever after with Parkerx2.

    ~Istra~

  83. Alex Says:

Eh, I’ve got my money on…. Nothing. I don’t know. The entire planet catches fire.

  84. Bobby Crosby Says:

Marina: “Real stories” have endings, as does this one. And as I’ve said a million times, people, more comics are planned after the graphic novel is done in eight pages, jeez. The GRAPHIC NOVEL ends soon. The comic can and will continue in some form, probably telling short stories featuring the characters.

Kittin: blatantcomics.com — I write all of those. Lots more coming in the near future as well.

“I just wish there is some way to wrap it up so it doesn’t get depressing.”

It’s like the least depressing ending ever.

“Huh. I didn’t think Guy would be the type to listen in on conversations”

Uh, this is the second time he’s done it in the comic.

  85. hilary Says:

really? Stasia won’t speak to her dad?? Theres goes the dramatic confrontation I expected!

  86. Kalisto Says:

Wowio can kiss my @ss. I want to download the comic too damnit!

  87. Av Says:

Who cares if they get married or not? I think they should live in lovely sin and make loads of babies.

  88. Josh Says:

I don’t know. Some thing tells me that just because she said they aren’t married doesn’t make it true. *shrugs* I’m probably wrong but its just my own skepticism.

  89. Lydia Says:

I’m still that assistant-dude’s biggest fan. Didja name him yet?

  90. Bobby Crosby Says:

Yeah, just went with the first name I was thinking of way back then. You’ll see it on Page 84!

  91. Tseng Says:

See, I know how I would end the story . . . but then I’m inordinately cruel to all my protagonists. I’d make the ending bittersweet, with Guy and Stasia going their separate ways, but acknowledging that because of their fling they’ve both become stronger people. Heartbreak, angst, but ultimately hope.

However, so far this looks like a romantic comedy, which means there’s going to have to be a proposal or a continuing dating relationship or something like that at the end. Which is a fine way to end a story too.

  92. Alisha Says:

awwwww im sad :( i knew it would never be legally true but i kinda just hoped. and oh-boy does stasia’s dad look pissed!!!

  93. Caramel Says:

    Aw, she looks so heartbroken.

  94. Cybik Says:

    Janny x Parker
    Guy x Ana

Anyone with me on that one?

  95. Dra Says:

I’m glad to hear the comic will continue after the novel is finished. It’s a group of believable enjoyable characters. 90ish pages really just is not enough.

Also, someone said Guy wasn’t the type to eavesdrop…perfectly good people listen in on other peoples conversations. Especially people who listen to people for a living. You learn more about people when they don’t think your paying attention than you ever will from a blatant question.

  96. Coughman Says:

    DAD SMASH!

  97. LazerWulf Says:

I think even if Guy couldn’t hear what Janny said, he’s definitely at least watching, and can deduce one of two things based on Ana’s expression.

    1) Ana’s expression is a reaction to them actually being married. This would reveal that she actually is mortified at the thought of being married to Guy, which would make Guy’s expression plausible, as he is sad that Ana doesn’t truly love him. However, based on their 10-minute kiss and their experiences over the past day or two would seem to prove this theory false. Which would lead him to conclude that:

    2) Ana’s expression is a reaction to them NOT actually being married. This means Guy’s expression is more out of empathy (which would make sense, as he is a guidance councilor, who is supposed to be good at empathy) for a friend who’s fairy-tale dream just came crashing down around her.

But since Bobby has said that he did overhear, this makes the above deductions unnecessary.

  98. LazerWulf Says:

P.S. If this was the second time Guy eavesdropped, when was the first time? I honestly don’t remember.

  99. Bobby Crosby Says:

Read the comic again, then. It’s best to just read it all in one sitting anyway. Can’t imagine someone just reading it one page a time once a week or so — not smart.

  100. Z Says:

When are we going to see the next page? I heard there was going to be one released everyday.

  101. Bobby Crosby Says:

There’s six hours left in the day.

  102. Dingbat Says:

    The plot Thickens!

gotta say this is gonna make the last few pages even more interesting, looking forward to them Bobby!

and Eisu i love how you did the colouring with the big revelation on the “are you married” front, especially the slight darkening of the background in panel 5, it holds the moment brilliantly with Ana’s face

thanks for all the effort your putting into this!
    -
    Ding

  103. Rosebud Says:

Bobby writes: Stasia and her dad don’t say a word to each other in the entire book.
Awwwww. Perchance a hug or look of approval? Dare I dream of reconciliation?

    Tseng writes [evil plot possibilities]:
May you get a wasting virus that causes you to switch from writing to writing sappy, romantic novellas, which drives you from your unread misery to star writer fame, just in time for you to die young. That would fit so nicely with your story lines!

Bobby writes: No “cut out pages” — everything’s just tightened, shortened.
Perchance an extended scenes version? =D Although, in fairness, shorter is probably better when it comes to making a movie. Longer stories require cutting. And with “a page a day” at this point, there’s nothing we can complain about!

  104. David Kastrup Says:

Hm, everybody is talking about Guy proposing to Ana… That does not even make sense: he would have to let on that he eavesdropped. And he definitely is the one who has been fighting all the time to keep the door open for Ana.

I should think that in the end she will be the one proposing to him. While she had a sort-of moment earlier, it was not as much a proposition rather than a preproposition: making sure that at least the basics would be there.

Now we do have the angle of Guy pulling Mr. Tyler away from the TV. That could mean that Guy’s mother is an old flame of Mr. Tyler, and Guy and Ana happen to be half-siblings tragically.

Yes, a bit too much Greek tragedy and Deus ex Machina. There you are.
